A recent YouGov survey found that only 6% of people questioned work 9-5 in their full-time job.
Almost half those surveyed said they work flexible hours, through compressed working weeks (fitting all their contracted hours into fewer days), or job shares.
This is great news as it means that employees can fit work around their other commitments. Whether that be looking after their kids or working on personal projects.
The study also found that most full-time workers would prefer to start work earlier (7, or 8am) and finish mid-afternoon. The results were consistent across all demographics, suggesting both young and old, and male and female workers want flexibility in their workday.
Results also showed that workers who are offered flexible hours are more motivated and more likely to stay at their jobs for longer.
How do I request flexible working?
In the UK, it’s your statutory right to be able to request flexible working after 26 weeks (6 months) of employment. The request must be in writing, and you must have legitimate reasons for the request.
Your employer then has three months to decide, and they must have a sound business reason to refuse the request. You can make one request every 12 months.
This process is straight forward so if you can think of a good reason to change your hours, then the chances are you will be able to ditch the 9-5.
I recently changed my hours on some days, now working 8am to 4pm, as this enables me to make more of my evenings. Some days, I prefer to start later and work later, and I am fortunate to be able to do this too.
Why should I request flexible working?
Everyone has different life commitments and would benefit from flexible working in a variety of different ways. For example, those studying would benefit from more revision and learning time, and parents could spend more time with children
Personally, I use this time to work on side projects (e.g. this blog), and side hustles such as tutoring and focus groups. This is perfect as it enables me to earn more money during the week instead of dedicating all my time to one (full-time) job.
